After qualifying in 1979, Gail specialised as a critical care nurse, spending many years working in intensive care units across South Wales. She worked as a research and development officer and researcher in health sciences. Since moving into higher education in 2001, Gail has built up considerable experience in programme development and has expertise in work-based learning. She also held the position of associate dean for postgraduate studies. Gail is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has been a member of the Nursing Times editorial board for the past 13 years and a judge for the Nursing Times Awards for a number of years.
