Interim Chief Nursing Officer for Wales,
Gareth started his NHS career at 16 on a Youth Training Scheme working in a Learning Disability Unit, in Neath, West Glamorgan. He qualified in 1987 going on to gain experience as Ward Manager working in Trauma, Burns and Plastic Surgery, a senior Nurse Manager in Neurosciences as well as a number of years Divisional Director of Nursing covering Medicine, Elderly and Urgent Care.
Gareth has held the role of interim CNO since March 2021. Before joining Welsh Government, his most recent post was as the Executive Director of Nursing at Swansea Bay University Health Board, and prior to that he worked for a number of years as a Chief Nurse in NHS Trusts in the South West of England and in the West Midlands.
Gareth is exceptionally proud to be a nurse and public servant and says his ambition is that this is always a positive and lasting experience and he believes that the provision of safe, effective, and efficient patient care cannot be compromised
