Specialist nurse for childhood constipation,
Dartford and Gravesham Trust
Sandra Hanson is a specialist nurse for childhood constipation at Dartford and Gavesham NHS Trust. Her interest in childhood constipation began when she worked as a children’s community nurse. She felt that information on treating constipation was inconsistent and that giving enemas was not ideal, and resolved to find a better way to manage constipation. Her work is primarily focusing on education for parents and professionals so that children are managed in the community and do not need to attend hospitals.
She won the Continence Care category of the Nursing Times Awards in 2017, and was a finalist in 2011 and 2014, and was winner of the BJN Bowel Care Nurse of the Year Award 2013.
Her career has been UK wide including senior sister posts in paediatrics, neonates, children’s intensive care, neonatal outreach and children’s community nursing.
