Blessy John
Modern Matron
University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

I am a matron in ophthalmology, the largest and busiest department at University Hospitals Leicester, with almost 28 years of nursing experience. I began my career with a General Nursing and Midwifery degree from India and later completed a BSc in Nursing from De Montfort University. Throughout my career, I have been committed to fostering compassionate leadership, ensuring it is at the core of every role I undertake within the NHS. In addition to my NHS role, I am a leader of Leicester Kerala Nurses, an organisation representing nearly 800 nurses. I focus on empowering international nurses and promoting diversity within the NHS, creating an inclusive and supportive environment. To enhance my leadership skills, I have completed several respected programmes, including the RCN Leadership Programme, LEO, and Connect. My dedication to the profession was recognised through my election to the Royal College of Nursing East Midlands Board, where I continue to advocate for compassionate care and inclusive leadership.
