My name is Lisa Canade and I have been a School Nurse in Hammersmith & Fulham for the past eight years, and I truly love what I do. A couple of years ago, I was honoured to become a Queen's Nurse, and last year, I was thrilled to win the Children’s Category at the Nursing Times Awards—two achievements that still feel quite surreal but fill me with immense pride. My journey into School Nursing began straight after qualifying as a Paediatric Nurse. During my training, I spent time with School Nurses on placement and immediately knew this was where I belonged. I believe our role is fundamental within community nursing, acting as both advocates for children and champions of public health. I have recently embarked on a project to create innovative animations that teach children about medical conditions-using only children's voices, images and their lived experiences. So far these have been very successful, so my plan is to continue to create a whole package of them along with lesson plans and get them into the National Curriculum! Before becoming a nurse, I had a background in languages and a completely different career. This shift has only deepened my passion for my profession, inspiring me every day to make the most of every opportunity and strive for excellence.
